What is Cambourne’s Conditions of Learning?

Brian Cambourne is a distinguished researcher of literacy and learning and is a professor at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales in Australia. He was also a post-doctoral Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Research Fellow at the Center for Studies in Reading at the University of Illinois. And in 1988, he developed his Conditions of Learning research. This work, which detailed the best conditions for teaching children, has been applied in classrooms across the globe.

Brian Cambourne’s Conditions of Learning includes seven conditions that, when present in both their home and school environments, can help children easily learn oral and written language. Those conditions are immersion, demonstration, expectation, responsibility, approximation, use, and response. Kids gain confidence in their abilities under these conditions. And they have the freedom and exploration to learn and grow. It’s these seven conditions that PALS has built into the core of our curriculum.
